Colon St

Colon street is the oldest street in the Philippines and is quite well-known throughout the country. However. the street has some bad press for some incidents of snatching, hold-ups, and swindles. But it is quite safe to walk the street of Colon provided you follow these guidelines:

  • Beware of snatchers and swindlers. If you find someone who approaches you and the person looks dubious, then just be careful and walk away far from him.
  • Do not carry valuable things like expensive cell phones, gadgets, and digital cameras because you just might not know that snatchers are lurking near you to get these from you.
  • Do not carry much cash because there are also pickpockets; just bring enough cash to purchase souvenir items and pay for your fare.

If you are a first-time visitor to Cebu, your trip will not be complete if you pass on the chance to walk along the oldest city in the country.

There is an obelisk at the end of the street that marks the significance of this place in Philippine history. Although this area is not as glamorous as, say, the Cebu Business Park or the Fuente Osmeña, shopping here, like in Manalili and Plaridel, is quite cheap compared to mall prices. This street is usually very busy, as many jeepneys ply their routes along Colon, and because the street is also visited by many people.
