Lapu-Lapu Monument Shrine
This is a very famous landmark located between Mactan and Punta Engaño in Lapu-Lapu city in honour of their Muslim chieftain Lapu-Lapu. In fact, this is the very first Filipino victory against the threat of Spanish colonization. It was said that the reason for the fight between Magellan and Lapu-Lapu was Rajah Humabon’s insistence to punish Lapu-Lapu, his opponent in a fight to control a certain piece of land.
However, there is so much folklore about what happened during that time. No one really knows if Lapu-Lapu was really the one who killed Magellan or his native warriors. In fact, Antonio Pigafetta, the chronicler of Magellan’s life and a survivor of that battle, wrote that they were attacked by 1500 native warriors which could disprove that Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan.
On the other hand, there are many stories about Lapu-Lapu’s existence. Some believe that he did not die but turned into a stone that will guard the islanders from future harm, which is why fishermen sometimes throw coins near the place so that they will be blessed with bountiful harvest.
Another tale is that Lapu-Lapu had been forewarned with the upcoming battle, and that is why they were victorious in the fight. To date, the Mactan shrine has three important markers. They are:
- The Magellan Marker – it is the spot where Magellan was killed by Lapu-Lapu
- The Magellan Monument – an obelisk built in 1866 by an Augustinian priest in honour of Magellan
- Lapu-Lapu’s statue – a statue built in honour of local hero Lapu-Lapu
